SAR Scholarship Fund – A Year Round Endeavor

Dear Members,

March 31, 2022 is the deadline for students to submit applications for an SAR Scholarship, but did you know the SAR Scholarship Trustees, Scholarship Fundraising Committee, and SAR staff work tirelessly on the Scholarship program year-round? Fun fact: our SAR Scholarship program provides more than double the scholarship funds to local students than the state association scholarship program. That’s pretty amazing.

This program is one of the cornerstones of SAR’s community and charitable efforts.

The Scholarship Fund was started decades ago and initially a $600 yearly program that provided $100 to $200 scholarships for Sacramento students attending American River Junior College, Sacramento City College, and Sacramento State College (now California State University, Sacramento). It has since expanded to support students in a variety of fields at many different institutions across the United States. It has provided over a HALF MILLION DOLLARS in scholarships since inception! The students who receive a SAR Scholarship to attend college will one day be your clients, your co-workers, and our community leaders.

There are many ways to contribute to the success of this important program. For starters, you can just make a donation directly. Additionally, you could purchase a leaf, bird, branch, rock, or trunk section on the “Giving Tree”. If you’ve visited the SAR Mack Powell Events Center you will recognize the tree in the main lobby. Reach out to Madison Hall to buy a space on the tree. You could also participate in one of SAR’s many fun fundraising events — you may remember the recent virtual fun run, or annual St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon…and right now you can participate in “Last Member Standing” which is one of my personal favorites where you purchase a number, and if your number is the last remaining after a drawing, you win! Here’s a link to purchase your numbers for this year which will be drawn at the June main meeting.

Our wonderful Scholarship Trustees are Judy Schoer, Nick LaPlaca, Chip O’Neill, Perry Georgallis and Peggy Adams. These members work so hard to keep our scholarship program vibrant, and to keep the funds flowing to deserving students in our area! Please be sure to donate and to thank them for all their hard work.

Cheers!
