REALTOR® Safety Month

As we observe REALTOR® Safety Month this September, it’s crucial to reflect on the tragic loss of one of our own, Yuk-Ying (Anita) Mui, a REALTOR® whose life was taken in a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence. Anita Mui’s remains were found in Parry Sound, Ontario, after she went missing on August 9th. The discovery of her body on August 12th and the subsequent investigation have shaken our community to its core. The ongoing investigation points to this being a targeted incident, making it all the more harrowing for those in our profession.

Anita’s story is a stark reminder of the risks that real estate professionals face daily. Meeting clients, showing properties, and traveling alone to unfamiliar locations are all part of a REALTOR®’s job. However, these activities also expose us to potential dangers. Anita’s tragic death underscores the importance of being vigilant and taking safety seriously.

This month, as we honor Anita’s memory, the Sacramento Association of REALTORS® is committed to ensuring that our members are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to stay safe. We are honored to welcome Sheriff Jim Cooper as the keynote speaker at our Main Meeting, where he will be addressing the critical topic of REALTOR® safety. Sheriff Cooper will provide insights and strategies to help us protect ourselves in our line of work, covering essential safety practices, situational awareness, and the importance of having a safety plan in place.

In addition to Sheriff Cooper’s presentation, we encourage all our members to take advantage of the resources and training available during REALTOR® Safety Month. Whether it’s attending safety seminars, downloading safety apps, or implementing new protocols in your daily routine, there are many ways to enhance your safety while on the job.

As we move forward, let’s honor Anita Mui by committing to our own safety and looking out for each other. No transaction is worth risking your life, and no commission is worth compromising your safety. Let this tragic event be a catalyst for change, reminding us all of the importance of staying vigilant, informed, and prepared.
Please join us at the Main Meeting to learn more about how you can protect yourself and your colleagues. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone in our profession.
