At the Sacramento Association of REALTORS®, we are proud to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of our industry. We believe that creating a fair and inclusive real estate environment strengthens our profession and helps ensure that homeownership is accessible to all. Throughout history, courageous leaders have paved the way for greater economic and housing opportunities, and this Black History Month, we honor one such trailblazer: Maggie Walker.
Maggie Walker was a visionary in the early 20th century, making history as the first woman to charter a bank in the United States when she founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903 in Richmond, Virginia. At a time when financial institutions systematically excluded Black Americans, Walker’s bank provided a path to homeownership and business success, empowering Black families with access to affordable loans. By 1920, the bank had issued more than 600 mortgages and created employment opportunities, helping build a foundation for economic stability in the Black community.
Her legacy reflects the values we uphold today—ensuring that all individuals, regardless of background, have the opportunity to achieve the dream of homeownership. As REALTORS®, we continue to advocate for policies that promote fair housing, diverse leadership, and equitable opportunities in real estate.
Walker’s impact reminds us that progress is built on action, inclusion, and perseverance. By fostering a more inclusive industry, we honor pioneers like Maggie Walker and continue their work toward a more equitable future.
This Black History Month, we celebrate #HerStory as a vital part of our collective history.
